BLUE EYES ONLY

SCENARIO: GIUK-C, Convoy
           adapted by Cass Johnson
from 2nd Fleet, Victory Games (1986)

C.1 Background -- The time is now W-Day +12. Incidents between Soviet
and NATO forces have been few for the last several days, but the
Soviet war machine has not been idle. Since W-Day +7, the Soviet Army
has been massing in central Europe. Those forces which had remained
in the now-democratic Eastern European nations are on full alert. NATO
intelligence indicates that several Soviet armored divisions are now
poised on the western border of the Soviet Union. In response to these
actions, the United States has started deploying armor and infantry
units to Europe and Great Britain. The Soviets claim such actions are
a precursor to war, and if such deployments are not immediately halted,
they will take actions to prevent the convoy ships arrival in Europe.
The navies of both Super Powers have begun full mobilization
        procedures.
At the present time, several US cargo ships are enroute to
Great Britain. To stop these ships from arriving, the Soviets see no
option but to sink them, knowing full well such actions will either
cause NATO to sue for peace or will start full-scale warfare by both
        Blocs.

C.2 Blue Orders -- In order to fully mobilize the NATO army in the central
European region, thirteen cargo ships are enroute to the British Isles.
It is extremely important that the cargo ships arrive safely at either
Faslane or, preferably, Bergen. You have three SAGs (one traveling
with the large cargo ship convoy) available to meet the expected Soviet
        submarine threat in the region.

C.3 Intelligence Brief -- The Soviets understand the importance of Atlantic
shipping to maintain the European war effort. Expect several Soviet
submarines to intercept the convoys. You can also expect Bear Ds out
of Bodo to assist in targeting the convoys.

C.4 Minimum Victory Conditions -- anchor at least nine merchant ships off
Faslane for six hours, or six merchants off Bergen for three hours.

RED EYES ONLY

C.1 Background -- The time is now W-Day +12. Incidents between Soviet

cause NATO to sue for peace or will start full-scale warfare by both
        Blocs.

C.2 Red Orders -- The resupply of NATO units in Europe must be prevented.
Should war occur, the Soviet Army wishes to avoid a well-prepared and
supplied US army on the battlefield. You have seven submarines at your
disposal, and several Bear Ds. You are to search-out, localize, and
destroy any NATO cargo ships in the GIUK-Gap region.

C.3 Intelligence Brief -- Numerous NATO merchant ships are approaching the
British Isles and Norway from the west, transiting along the south
tip of Greenland. They are not traveling in one convoy. In addition,
there is at least one NATO SAG engaged in escort operations along the
route. Expect enemy ASW aircraft to be operating out of Iceland and
        Britain.

C.4 Minimum Victory Conditions -- find and sink six merchant ships.
